  2.                         WHY "RUBY'S PEARLS?" 
  3.  
  4.           I remember warm summer nights in the days when air 
  5.      conditioning was to be found at the drugstore, and windows 
  6.      were left open, with fans turned on high. I remember cold
  7.      winter nights when a space heater warmed the house, and I ran
  8.      to a cold bed to be followed by my parent, carrying a blanket
  9.      warm from the heater, which was then wrapped tightly around
  10.      me. And I remember drifting off to sleep to the radio sounds
  11.      of Burns & Allen, Edgar Bergen & Charlie McCarthy, Fibber
  12.      McGee & Molly, The Shadow, and, my all-time favorite, Amos 'N
  13.      Andy. 
  14.           Either Amos or Andy was married to Saphire, (which was
  15.      pronounced Saff-eye-uh). The other continually asked, (I
  16.      assume referencing a former paramour), "Do de name Ruby
  17.      Bee-goan-yuh strike a familiuh kaw-uhd?" 
  18.           Always, since first I can remember, I wrote, ...poems,
  19.      short stories, articles, letters; never dreaming that one day
  20.      I would do it for money. 
  21.           When finally I broke into the field of journalism, I 
  22.      fell in love. I was extremely lucky, going from general 
  23.      Assignment, to business reporter, news editor, and then 
  24.      publisher of my own weekly, before striking out as a freelance
  25.      writer. I used the two Florida Press Awards I was blessed to
  26.      win along the way to firmly launch my freelance writing
  27.      career. 
  28.           Always, always, however, I dreamed of having my own 
  29.      humor column. As news editor I had one, but I wanted one with
  30.      a name. 
  31.           In my own weekly, I had one, and chose the name I'd
  32.      decided on those long years ago, without even knowing I'd made
  33.      a choice. That name, of course, was Ruby Begonia. 
  34.           Ruby Begonia. Something about the name *does* strike a
  35.      familiuh kaw-uhd, and takes me on a journey into the past. It
  36.      warms my heart, like that blanket warmed my toes. I can't
  37.      explain it, I only know I feel it. 
  38.           When I closed my paper, I expected to never have 
  39.      another newspaper column. And perhaps that will be the case.
  40.      So, when I decided to launch this electronic short fiction
  41.      magazine, the name was never in question. 
  42.           So many have asked me about the unusual name of this 
  43.      elecmag. Why "Ruby's Pearls?" they ask, and this is why. 
  44.           I may never have that column again. But I'll always 
  45.      have "Ruby's Pearls."

  48.      Ruby's Pearls is dedicated to electronic publishing, and is
  49.      otherwise published only once yearly, in hard copy format.
  50.      That publication is limited, and is distributed only to the
  51.      authors whose works appears therein, representing a 'best of'.
  52.      Those volumes number two to date, and are entitled "A Single
  53.      Strand of Perfect Pearls" (1991-92, and "A Double Strand of
  54.      Perfect Pearls" (1992-93). Costs of such reproduction and
  55.      distribution are borne solely by the editor and publisher of
  56.      Ruby's Pearls, and are not intended to violate the Ruby's
  57.      Pearls logo: "Do more than hug a tree. Save its life -- read
  58.      Ruby's Pearls." The yearly 'best of' anthology is intended as
  59.      a thank you to the authors who contribute their efforts
  60.      throughout each year to make Ruby's Pearls the consistent
  61.      award-winning elecmag it has proven itself to be.
